Hi Shirley.
Here's what I've found:
On page 904 of the NY Adjutant-General Report of 1895: "Miller, James H.;
age 19; enlisted 12/21/1863 at Parish, NY; mustered in as private in Co E
on 12/28/1863 to serve three years; mustered out on 5/22/1865 at
Wilmington, Delaware."
The December 1863 muster-in roll for Co E, entry no. 49, does not give any
additional info, except that it says he was from Parish, within the 22nd
Congressional District of NY, and that he was enrolled by "R. McCully."
There are no surviving "regimental books" for Co E of the 24th NY Cav, but
that Company was absorbed into the 1st Provisional Cav at the end of the
war, and the book for that company, entry No. 80, states: "James H.
Miller; age 19; 5' 7" tall; fair complexion; dark eyes; dark hair; born in
Oswego, NY; employed as a teamster; enlisted December 21, 1863 at Parish,
NY by R. McCully for 3 years."
I don't see any references to desertion, but sometimes even a brief leave
without permission would lead to a desertion comment in the records. If
the soldier came back reasonably soon he might be punished but few were
shot for it and most were simply welcomed back, so the term "desertion" is
not as bad as it may seem (my own ancester was briefly a "deserter").
Hope this helps,
Donald Lockhart |
